Arm Chair
Burning Man 2025 Honorarium Awardee

Arm. Chair. Arm Chair.
This project is a chair held up by and nestled within a halo of assorted arms. Meant to look visually familiar to a throne, the piece is a functional chair where participants can sit. Be surrounded by the support/arms of your community, sit and give your arms a break, link arms with a friend and watch the world go by, wrap yourself in long dangling arms, manipulate arms, find secret messages, and have an arms race.

The arms are meant to be a lighthearted representation of how people in communities help each other. We use our arms, our strengths and talents to support one another, to support someone who needs to sit down and take a rest, to cheer people up. The arms aren’t attached to bodies/faces because sometimes we don’t even truly recognize where support is coming from or how the actions of others are lifting us up. Various kinds of arms come together to form the whole which is a depiction of how diverse communities (even ones with weird spaghetti alien arms) can occupy the same space, work together, and create something larger than each individual.
As an artistic piece it is an exploration of form, color, size and texture using the single element of an arm as a medium to create visual diversity.

Arm Chair will be installed at Burning Man 2025 and is funded in part by the Burning Man Honorarium program.
